In a tale of two games, the Bellarmine University baseball team split a doubleheader with Middle Tennessee, highlighted by a dominant pitching performance from sophomore right-hander Cole Carver.
Carver Shines in Game 1 Gem
After dropping the series opener on Friday, the Knights rebounded in a big way in Game 1 on Saturday. Carver was simply untouchable, tossing a complete-game shutout in Bellarmine's 3-0 victory. The young hurler scattered just three hits while striking out 10 Blue Raiders batters.
"What this really means is that Cole has taken a major step forward this season," said Bellarmine head coach Rob Podorsky. "His stuff was electric today, and he showed the poise of a seasoned veteran. This is the kind of performance that can really jumpstart our season."
Middle Tennessee Roars Back in Game 2
Unfortunately, the Knights couldn't sustain the momentum from Carver's gem, as Middle Tennessee cruised to a 9-2 win in the series finale. The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, roughing up the Bellarmine bullpen for nine runs on 12 hits.
"We just couldn't find that same energy and execution in Game 2," Podorsky admitted. "Middle Tennessee is a quality opponent, and they made us pay for our mistakes. But I'm proud of the way our guys bounced back in the first game - that's the kind of performance we need to build on going forward."
A Promising Path Ahead
The bigger picture here is that Bellarmine has shown flashes of brilliance, even against tough competition like Middle Tennessee. With Carver leading the way on the mound and an offense that can produce when clicking, the Knights have a promising path ahead as they look to make a push in conference play.
As U.S. News & World Report ranks Bellarmine as one of the top universities in the Midwest, the baseball team is aiming to bring similar success to the diamond. If Carver and the Knights can build on this split, they could be a team to watch in the coming weeks and months.
